OUR VINEYARDS

Good wine begins in the vineyard

The Schubert Estate Vineyards:

Our Grape Varieties in total are mainly Shiraz 37 acres & Viognier 3.0 acres

  • 1 Home-block Viognier 1.4hectares approx
  • 2 Goose-yard Block Shiraz 1.4
  • 3 The M. Schubert Block Shiraz 2.7
  • 4 Celebration Block Shiraz 2.8 (picture taken after planting in 1999 note the vineguards)
  • 5 Boot Hill Shiraz 4 (pictured on your right)

The Schuberts established their vineyards with a clear intention of working with rather than against, nature. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and inhabitants.

The philosophy behind planting the lands in proportion of approximately half vineyards and and half South Australian native trees, grasses and shrubs was to ensure a natural corridor for wildlife, land care sustainability and a pleasant vista.

The vineyards are carefully maintained using organic and natural products to maintain the quality and enhance the soil.

Plantings are easily accessed with wide rows of 3.6 metres and vines were planted at 2 metre spacing to a wire height of 1.2 metres. All the vines are hand pruned and the grapes of the major vineyards are hand picked. After the grapes are harvested a cover crop is planted using oats, wheat or Faba beans. The cover crop is mulched onto the soil, in late spring, for natural weed control, moisture conservation and soil enrichment. Only the minimum amount of tractor traffic is tolerated. To control low water sub-soil levels the Enviroscan system is used. Radar controlled bird-scare devises are used to control pest species.

Schubert Estate is located on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga, an area highly regarded for its vineyards. Across the road is the Greenock Creek crushing and winemaking facility and vineyards. Next door to Schubert Estate are the Torbreck vineyards and the Penfolds Stonewell Road vineyard.

As growers the Schuberts first supplied their grapes to the neighbouring winery Torbreck Vintners.
