Goose-yard Block - Vintage 2003

SCHUBERT ESTATE - 2002 SHIRAZ GOOSE-YARD BLOCK - BAROSSA VALLEY - ( $90.00 US ) - RED - 94 points & SCHUBERT ESTATE - 2003 SHIRAZ GOOSE-YARD BLOCK - BAROSSA VALLEY - ( $90.00 US ) - RED - 95 points - Two fabulous examples of old vine Shiraz , both of these offerings display a surreal combination of purity, elegance, and delineation with enormous concentration and intensity. Their black/purple colors are accompanied by aromas of espresso roast intermingled with blackberries, crème de cassis, melted licorice, bacon fat, and a touch of subtle oak. Both are ripe, full-bodied efforts, with the 2003 appearing to possess slightly more length and ripeness. It also had a slim edge in terms of elegance, but at this level of quality, to choose one over the other is splitting hairs. Both are well-endowed, super-concentrated Shiraz with more elegance and finesse than typical for these blockbusters from South Australia. Both should evolve for 12-15+ years. Well what can we say about the truly magnificent Schubert Goose-yard Block 2003? This 100% Barossa Shiraz is truly remarkable. It’s gone from strength to strength every time tasted, this time it was out of this world. 10 hours in decanter did more magic than I ever could imagine. Total black/blue colour. The fruit is incredibly ripe, must have be picked at a very low cropping. It bursts from the glass with Blueberry/black fruits, smoke, tar, graphite and some meat at the end. In the mouth it has great purity, texture and balance. Some my think it’s over the top, but for me it’s totally fascinating not heavy at all... 98+Points - Magnus Doverborg BB on eRobertParker.com

Schubert Estate Goose-yard Block 2003 - Finally got around to cracking one of these over dinner the other night. Deep purple in colour, the wine initially didn’t give much to the nose, very closed. Probably thinking back should have decantered for a couple of hours. But after some serious swirling in the glass it began to open up a little bit, with aromas of chocolate, plum, blackberry and coffee. This is a beauty and is a classic wine in the making. Great mouth feel and balance was my initial reaction … could easily drink this all night … not like some of the other ball-tearers coming out of the Barossa these days where 1-2 glasses is enough. But don’t be caught thinking that this is not a big wine, because it is. Very concentrated upfront fruit, with lashings of rich black fruits and dark chocolate. However, very smooth and elegant at the same time. Soft, silky tannins and a wonderfully long finish. This wine will definitely improve with some age on it, but boy is it drinking very nicely right now. Will be hard to keep my hands off in the short term! Another winner from the so-so 2003 Barossa vintage and worth every Mr Parker, Mr Halliday, Mr Whoever point. In fact take any critic’s score and add 2, it’s that good!! - Andrew Jordan Also read about Andrew's day working Vintage 2006 on the Auswine Forum

2003 Goose-yard Block "...A dense, glowing deep purple in colour, it is wrapped up pretty tight at the moment on the nose, but the hints of chocolate, coffee, spiced plum and violets give you some inkling of what is to follow. In the mouth it really hits its straps, as seamless and elegant a young Barossa Shiraz as I have seen in some time. Mocha, dark fruits, spice and a dash of pepper all meld together harmoniously, the alcohol is balanced and unobtrusive and it finishes with grace, a term I don’t always apply to Barossa shiraz. This is a cracker of a wine, and will be even better when it reaches its peak sometime in the next 5-10 years..." Grant Dodd - The WINNINGPRO - Australia
