Schubert Estate Goose-yard Block Shiraz.
Schubert Estate is situated on Roennfeldt Road, Marananga, Barossa Valley, South Australia. Schubert Estate - GOOSE-YARD BLOCK, is the vineyard nearest to the Schubert homestead and adjacent to the yard where the geese nest. Schubert Estate GOOSE-YARD BLOCK Shiraz was made for the first time in the year 2000. Grown and made entirely by the Schuberts the wine was originally approached as an opportunity to try to better understand the requirements (from fruit the Schuberts then sold to Torbreck Vintners), regarding grape quality, maturity, flavour, colour, ripeness at harvest and how the Schuberts could better meet those needs. From this foundation, of only one hogshead, a small quantity of approx. 80 dozen was made by the Schuberts. Since the 2000 vintage the annual amount of wine made slightly increased (to 200 dozen, plus 36 magnums, for the 2003 vintage). This is not only a single vineyard wine but a Barossa Shiraz with a true claim to being handcrafted; rod and spur hand pruned vines, hand picked grapes, with using open fermentation, basket pressed and matured in French barriques. The wine is racked 2-3 times prior to being sent for bottling (without filtration), with hand labelling and packaging upon its return. With the small amount involved, attention to detail remains a priority. The wine has developed into a characteristic Barossa shiraz with the colour, concentrated black fruits, dark chocolate, mocha and spice that comes with such a heritage. This 100% Shiraz was introduced to the Schubert family and friends a few years back as a non-vintage M.R.S. (Mates Rates Shiraz). Its easy drinking style soon caught on with those who were introduced to the wine. The popularity of the Goose-yard Block wines soon convinced the Schuberts to introduce their second wine (screw cap closure) - The Gosling. It has developed into a more stylish wine with the 2005 receiving 92 points from Halliday it's a fine addition to the Schubert Estate stable. Schubert Estate THE LONE GOOSE is the Goose-yard's 'new kid on the block'. This Shiraz with a dash of Viognier was made especially for a friend in Asia who holds a penchant for Schubert's wines and desired his own barrel. The Schubert family and friends also loved the taste of the 2005 vintage made; it complemented the foods served during the hot Australian summers and thereby satisfy the demands of those who enjoy their Barossa reds at any time of the year. Neadless to say it was decided that the Lone Goose 2005 was a real winner and meant to be shared. For the 2006 vintage The Lone Goose was enhanced, with a dash and a wiff of 3% Viognier, received a new label (gold embossed ink printed directly onto the bottle) and is now available with screw cap closure. Expect this one to become very popular as a wine-by-the-glass for lunch. Schubert Estate THE GANDER Schubert Estate THE GANDER is a 100% Shiraz wine made from a barrique of the Goose-yard Block wines. The wine would be left in the barrel for 2 years and further aged in bottle. The setting aside of just one barrel of wine that showed excellent potential commenced with the 2004 vintage much because the Schuberts were keen to continue to broaden their portfolio without compromising the quality produced.
